The Northern Lights

The Northern Lights can be found in the Polar regions and are truly spectacular! The effect made by them looks like it has been enhanced but they are completely natural. They are known as the Aurora Borealis and it is a natural light display in the sky particularly in high latitude regions and is caused by the collision of energetic charged particles with atoms in the high altitude atmosphere. They are named after the Roman goddess of dawn (Aurora) and the Greek name for the North wind. Roman mythology says that Aurora is the goddess of dawn and renews herself every morning and flies across the sky, announcing the arrival of the Sun. Therefore a perfect name for the Northern Lights.
